There is a thrill, and a feeling of relief, in discovering a great inexpensive wine. The pricey stuff carries the burden of exclusivity and the question: Can I afford this? Value wine is less complicated pleasure. A ten-dollar wine exists in a way that a $100 wine does not. It is on your favorite stores’ shelves, not just in the pages of magazines, and it comes in at a price you can handle.

Too often, here in Indonesia, wine suggests formality or expensive.  Consequently, wine can seem overly precious, and emblem of extravagance, demanding connoisseurship.  In other countries, such as France, Spain, Italy, Argentina and Australia, wine is a much less formal affair and inexpensive.

Chile and Argentina also supply some of the best inexpensive Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Then there are the regional wines, a Shiraz from Australia, a Rioja crianza from Spain, or a Chianti from Italy which emerge from centuries-old traditions, rather than from a demand in the marketplace for the newest, most popular variety. Serious wine lovers reserve their greatest enthusiasm for such wines, simple pleasures that have survived the test of time.
